This production, about the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, in Parkland, FL., helps provide empathy and understanding on the many ways gun violence touches our communities; and how to tell that story, when it is so painful and yet so important to tell! Directed by David Y. Check (dir. The Green Book, Mother Courage and Her Children, Indecent, Chagall in School) in Louisville, ROOM 1214 is a sensitive and powerful play showing how through the power of theatre, we can hold space for memory, faith, resilience and resolve. A series of post-show, a panel, and talk back discussions will be held, the details to follow. These acts of violence actually occurred on Valentines Day, seven years ago. Based on real-life accounts of a Holocaust studies teacher at the school, we follow her return to her classroom one last time. Visited by the memories of her students — young people whose lives and achievements lie before them — they inspire and call out to us. Following the lessons taught by Holocaust survivor and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Elie Wiesel, his central message was, “The opposite of love is not hate. The opposite of love is indifference.” Again and again we must tell the story and strive against indifference today, to change history and to love. The students receive one final lesson, and as a community we learn together, “Never Forget.” PURCHASE TICKETS For further info, press interviews with playwright and director, and group sales: [email protected] Made possible with support from the Kentucky Performing Arts Spaces For All Fund ShPIeL gratefully thanks the ongoing support from the Jewish Heritage Fund Funding provided by the Marvin and Joyce Benjamin Endowment, a Central Kentucky Community Foundation Fund.
